A painting with the inspiring name Woman III was created in 1953, being the 3rd in a series of paintings of women by Dutch abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning. In November 2006, billionaire Steven A. Cohen bought the painting from David Geffen for the sum of $137,5 million USD.

$140,000,0004. No. 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock painted this abstract 8 by 4 feet piece in 1950, it was painted on a sheet of fiberboard with mainly brown and yellow paint, dripped on top of it instead of painted. Accoring to The New York Times, the painting was sold by David Geffen to David Martinez, although Martinez always denied this sale. If true however, this would be the 4th most expensive painting ever sold.

Francis Bacon painted fellow artist Lucian Freud in 1969 in a triptych, like he did with many of his friends. Little did he know, it was to be sold nearly 45 years later for a record amount.

The title means "The Dream" in French. This oil painting portrays Picasso's 22 year old mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter in typical Picasso style. Painted in 1932, it was sold in 1941 for $7,000, quite a large amount for that time. In October 2006, casino magnate Steve Wynn owned the painting and while showing it to his friends, he accidentally hit the painting with his elbow, creating a 6 inch tear. Wynn said about the event he thought it was a sign he shouldn't sell the painting. After a $90,000 repair, the painting was sold to Steven A. Cohen in 2013.

The Card Players by Paul Cézanne is a series of 5 paintings painted between 1890 and 1895. The paintings depict between 2 and 5 characters during a card game at a table. In April 2011, one version of The Card Players became the most expensive painting ever sold. This happened during a private auction, the buyer was the Royal Family of Qatar. The sale price is undisclosed but it's at least $259 million USD.
